Vitamin D from diet or skin synthesis
is inactive at first, liver and kidneys are required for its activation. Because the body can produce the
vitamin on its own it could be considered a hormone rather than a vitamin. Vitamin D deficiency has
become a popular problem due to changed living conditions, for example being at the office in a
closed room all day. According to the Robert-Koch institute most people are not provided with a
sufficient quantity of vitamin D.
During summer, sunscreens prevent sunlight
from generating vitamin D in the skin. In winter it is sometimes not possible to reach a sufficient
amount of sun exposure as the sun sets earlier. Moderate sunbathing in a tanning studio can be a
remedy to this problem. Modern tanning beds are equipped with special tubes which provide UVA and
UVB radiation and can thus perfectly counteract vitamin D deficiency.
You have to sweat to get good tanning results!
WRONG! You do NOT have to sweat to get good tanning results! Example: If it is windy at the beach
your skin will still get a nice tan. Not sweating does not mean that the sun is less powerful. That is also
why air-conditioned tanning beds do not negatively affect your tanning results.
It is not possible to do Pre-Tanning!
WRONG! It is possible to pre-tan in order to prepare your skin for a holiday. Sunlight builds up a
natural sun protection by thickening the skin. The UVB-intensity of modern tanning beds is
comparable to the natural sun, that is why tanning bed radiation builds up a natural sun protection, too
Your tan will be washed off when showering!
WRONG! It is possible to wash off residues of make-up or self-tanning lotions, but it is not possible to
wash off your tanned skin pigments. Example: Even though you go swimming in summer your skin
does not lose its color. Nevertheless, it is important to use a good skin care product that nourishes and
hydrates the skin to make your tan last longer.
After tanning, it is important to wait at least an hour before taking a shower!
WRONG! Heat opens skin pores, through which harmful substances from shampoo or body wash
could pass into your blood circulation. This could happen if you took a very long and hot shower
immediately after the tanning process. Even a short way home back home takes enough time to cool
down the pores again and make them shrink to their normal size. You can therefore take a shower
without worrying after returning home.
Tanning causes skin cancer!
WRONG! A research team led by Prof. Dr. Jörg Reichrath, Dermatologic Clinic at University
Hospital Homburg, came to the conclusion that there is NO definite link between moderate sunbathing
and an increased risk of malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer. Prof. Dr. Jörg Reichrath states
that studies of WHO or European Union are based on insufficient data.
